What Are You Reading?

What do you read?

I read blogs – a lot of them.  Some are for me because they’re in areas that interest me – such as Geekosystem and Singularity Hub, industry blogs so I can know when FB changes the proper picture size from 404×404 to 406×406 and can spend hours assigning someone to rewrite our best practices memo on the topic – Mashable, All Facebook,  and Brafton. I read some just for fun – like TastefullyOffensive (for what should be obvious reasons).  I don’t read as many as my colleague Robert Checkal who helps curate content for some of our clients – his Google Reader is by itself is an occasional S__storm of great content. Snap Them Out of It

Momentum, or what some think of as Newton’s First Law of Motion, “Every body remains in a state of rest or uniform motion (constant velocity) unless it is acted upon by an external unbalanced force,” not only applies to “every body” in motion but also to everybody.

Success begets success – it’s that x factor that helps makes great salesmen phenomenal and bad ones lousy.

It’s also the factor that makes the downer client or co-worker the downer on all occasions.  They start their day off badly and by 10a are dragging everyone else down.

The opposite is also true, so all is not lost.  There’s always (hopefully) one person in an office that can crack a joke at the worst situation and provide the best way out of the mess.  We could all use more of them. Continue reading

Building the Agency – Part I

How are today’s agencies building, or rebuilding, their services?  How are they staffing for these new services? Siloed or integrated programs?  Standalone teams or cross-practice groups?  We’ll examine these questions in a series of upcoming posts and I’d love to hear from those in the trenches, rather cubes, as well as those in the corner offices.

Ten years ago most PR professionals would learn everything they needed to simply by working. There may have been some silos or skills that most people didn’t touch, but those were for specialized areas. Continue reading

Stop Listening, Start Watching

We’re an industry of words – whether written or spoken, our bread and butter is, at its core, words.

  • What position will the candidate take?
  • What is the company’s announcement going to be?
  • Talking points, key messages, sound bites…

The list goes on and on. The problem – words themselves – while having the immense power to move mountains, by themselves are meaningless.

Stop Being Idiots -or- NATO and Perspective

© by Newtown grafitti

I made a mistake yesterday.  I opened my full Twitter stream – a few thousand folks (probably 90% or more PR or Marketing professionals) talking all at once.

It seems there is a very vocal contingent, of or our own professionals, who know nearly nothing about civics, world politics or anything beyond the next Twilight book or score of the current game. Further, we sadly know what the common perception of PR/Marketing professionals is (thank you reality TV). So I have a simple request to stop the further degradation of our industry’s image:  Continue reading
