Special Edition: Don’t Punish Penn State, Punish People

Penn State Brandywine © by Jim, the Photographer

I’ll admit upfront that the headline here is a bit of a linkbait, and that you are probably furious at me right now for having the gall to type such a sentence in light of the Freeh report that was released Thursday morning. We all know the horrific details of the Jerry Sandusky case, and I don’t really have the stomach to list out the rape of each child again. Besides, you’re still pissed at me for writing a headline suggesting Penn State shouldn’t be punished. Consider this for a moment.

Pennsylvania State  University didn’t rape those kids, nor did it cover anything up. Continue reading

When a Thanks isn’t a Thanks

Two words in the English language are sometimes very hard to say. That would be: Thank You.  Now, before you click off to another site because you think I’m going all Emily Post, let me explain.

You see, as we become more social, we are becoming more impersonal. It shouldn’t be that way. Just because we interact on Twitter, Facebook, etc., it doesn’t mean we should forget what it means to actually talk to someone. Quick texts from an iPhone or brief emails from your office desk may say, “Thx” or “:-),” but is it really a thanks? Continue reading

Where Is The Respect For Public Relations Pros?

Respect for PR professionalsLately I’ve been wondering if those of us in the public relations industry are ever really going to do the things necessary to earn the respect most people in this business deserve. Sure, there are plenty of PR hacks out there. But as with every industry, for every hack, there are dozens of knowledgeable, experienced, ethical and talented PR pros.

So, how do those of us who care about things—like respect for our chosen profession—go about making that a reality? Good question!

Here are some thoughts to consider: Continue reading

Summertime To-Dos

We have all heard of Spring cleaning and in the South, where I am from, we have freezer cleaning when it is hurricane season.(This basically means you use all of the items in the freezer so in case you lose power you don’t lose a lot of frozen items). Either way they are both dedicated times that you stop each year to focus on clearing out the clutter and reorganizing yourself.

While it is hard to stop in the PR world, summer is the perfect time to stop and clean up the shop. Add it to your Outlook calendar to save time for cleaning. Tackle those things that you wish you had time to do that would make life easier but you don’t have time to stop. Continue reading

Snap Them Out of It

Momentum, or what some think of as Newton’s First Law of Motion, “Every body remains in a state of rest or uniform motion (constant velocity) unless it is acted upon by an external unbalanced force,” not only applies to “every body” in motion but also to everybody.

Success begets success – it’s that x factor that helps makes great salesmen phenomenal and bad ones lousy.

It’s also the factor that makes the downer client or co-worker the downer on all occasions.  They start their day off badly and by 10a are dragging everyone else down.

The opposite is also true, so all is not lost.  There’s always (hopefully) one person in an office that can crack a joke at the worst situation and provide the best way out of the mess.  We could all use more of them. Continue reading

A Social Media Crisis Plan. Yes, You Need One

EMERGENCY © by Chris.Violette

If you don’t already have a plan that outlines how you’ll handle a social media crisis, consider this your wake-up call–and something you should put on your to-do list today. As you create a Social Media Crisis Plan, it’s a good idea to look at your PR crisis communication plan and develop a similar plan for social media outlets. Don’t wait until a crisis happens in the social media space to create a plan for dealing with it — when you least expect it, it will happen. Continue reading
